With diverse landscapes and architectural beauties, Spain offers so many reasons for the perfect wedding destination. Incredible castles of this European country are like the cherry on the top, ideal for couples who dream of saying “I Do”, in a fairytale fashion. Catalonia is a great destination boasting numerous fascinating and romantic castles for magical weddings.
From just 20 minutes to an hour's drive from Barcelona, you can find your perfect venue with histories enriching the vibes at the wedding. Furthermore, these castles give a royal touch to your wedding album with adorable pictures portraying your beautiful love story, which you can cherish even after long years.
Being a wedding photographer, I have been to several destination weddings in Catalonia. From a photography point of view, I have listed the three most popular and romantic castles in Catalonia where you can marry your partner surrounded by majestic scenery; the perfect element for wedding photographs.
Castell d’Empordà
Located in Catalonia’s Empordà part, Castell d’Empordà is the center between Barcelona and the French border. It takes around an hour and a half from the epicenter of Barcelona. Nestled in stunning fields, with an onsite hotel, and a short distance from azure beaches along the Costa Brava, Castell d’Empordà has got everything to be called the ideal wedding destination. It is an approximately 12-hectare property featuring lush greenery with oak and olive trees. Here you will get a terrace with spectacular sea views as well as a comfy wedding chapel.
More than a century later, it was inherited by the Margarit family through marriage. Then in the 1970s, Salvador Dali wished to buy the castle for his wife Gala, using his artwork as payment; but the owner refused the deal. The property was then bought in 1999 by Albert Diks and Margo Vereijken, who still are owners of the current hotel-restaurant Castell d'Empordà.
Castell de Sant Marçal
Castell de Sant Marçal is located 20 minutes from Barcelona's center, between Cerdanyola del Vallés and Sant Cugat del Vallès. The castle has gorgeous gardens that can be hired by individuals wishing to host an exclusive and spectacular event. The garden venue is always ideal for vibrant photos.
In terms of church construction, the history of Sant Marçal goes back to the 11th century. The castle was first referenced in historical documentation in the early 12th century. It was bought in 1225 by Ramón de Plegamans, whose son Marimón de Plegamans was a prominent figure in the area at the time. The present owners are his descendants, so Castell de Sant Marçal has been in the same family for over 700 years.
El Castillo de Tamarit
Only 10 minutes away from Tarragona and around an hour's journey from Barcelona by car or train, Castillo de Tamarit is another magnificent location for an enchanting wedding. The castle is spread over a large area and offers different area options for weddings. You can choose from the main square of the old town of Tamarit or the pool area at castle overlooking the sea. Just imagine yourself in the wedding attire, captured around lovely surroundings, particularly waters in the backdrop complimenting your photos.
If you want to make it a grandeur, request an 11th-century chapel to hold your ceremony. The castle's history dates back to the 12th century when it was built in the Romanesque style. Several decades later, it was used as a monitoring center for pirate attacks along the coast. Thereafter, under the reign of Peter IV of Aragon, the castle was surrounded by a wall to give further protection from sea exposure.
Conclusion
You can choose any of these castles with mentions in history for your royal fashion wedding. However, to document your wedding as photographs, you can choose Orlando Rivera.
